The Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is once again very pleased to host the opening concert of the Celtic Colours International Festival. The theme for this year's festival is "Home is Where the Heart Is" and the concert will feature many of Nova Scotia's finest entertainer's who have gone on to earn international acclaim but still remain loyal to their Cape Breton roots.

With over 25 albums to his credit, Bruce Cockburn is a veteran of the music business. Primarily a folk/rock based singer/songwriter, his music has also encompassed many other styles, including jazz, blues, reggae, and other world musics. A skilled lyricist and musician, his music is always evolving. The Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre, in partnership with 101.5 the Hawk and Maritime Inn, are very proud to present Bruce Cockburn at the Saerc Auditorium on Oct.23rd at 8:00pm. Tickets for this event will go on sale on May 26.

A tribute concert celebrating the music of Master Cape Breton Fiddler Jerry Holland will take place in the Bear Head Room on July 16th at 7:00pm. Some of Cape Breton's finest musicians will be on hand for this mega-concert including; Mike Hall, Howie MacDonald, Patrick Gillis, Robbie & Isaac Fraser, Kinnon & Betty Beaton, Brenda Stubbert, Marc Boudreau, Dawn & Margie Beaton, and Cheryl Smith.

Port Hawkesbury Highland Dance Competition

The 36th Annual Port Hawkesbury Highland Dance Competition will take place in the Bear Head Conference Room on May 29th beginning at 9:00am. We are pleased to welcome esteemed judges from Scotland and Ontario. The competition will feature over 150 highland dancers. Canteen services will be available.

The Fourth Annual Student Art Show

The Fourth Annual Student Art Show is scheduled this month for the J. Franklin Wright Gallery location in the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre. The Gallery Committee is pleased that students of the Strait Area Education Recreation Centre, Richmond Academy and Tamarac Education Centre will have works on display during the months of May and June.

The show will open on May 20, 2010, with an opening reception at 7:00 p.m. at the Galley. The general public is invited to attend the opening and to enjoy the student works, chats with the artists and light refreshments.

Under the direction of teachers Monica LeBlanc of SAERC and Lisa McNamara of Richmond Academy, and Heather Graham of Tamarac Education Cantre, students have been preparing since September for the annual art show. Students have participated in workshops in their art classes and in out of school events, and have submitted their best works for selection. The busy art teachers have selected the best works from the submissions and are now preparing, mounting and installing the works for the opening. Come see and enjoy!
