Port Hawkesbury Ceilidh Season 2016

Port Hawkesbury, NS - June 9, 2016 - Ceilidh season is upon us once again and the Port Hawkesbury Ceilidhs are set to go for another year.  The Tuesday night tradition will return for another extended season.  Sponsored by the Port Hastings Historical Society, the Ceilidhs begin on July 5, 2016 and run until IOctober 4, 2016 .

"This is the 6th season the Historical Society has sponsored the Ceilidhs, and last year was the first time we extended the season to October" says Bob MacEachern, one of the organizers.  "It was the right decision as we had great numbers throughout September and the pre-Celtic Colours show in October."

Once again this year's first show is part of the KitchenFest program; the Cape Breton - wide kitchen party coordinated by the Gaelic College.  Performers at the opening include Mairi Rankin of Mabou, Cyril MacPhee and Jackie Dunn MacIsaac.

"We're always excited to welcome back our regular and popular performers like Wendy MacIsaac, Sabra MacGillivray and Kinnon and Betty Beaton" adds MacEachern.  "And we continue the tradition of adding new faces like Hailee Lefort and David Rankin.  For the first time in our Ceilidh history, we have two of the Barra MacNeils on the program in Kyle and Sheumas along with a couple of their family members."

Back by popular demand for a Fifth Season!

Every Second Saturday from 10-2pm starting on June 11th and running until Oct. 15th!

Early in the growing season, there will be a variety of products ranging from annuals, baked goods, manur...e, eggs, and work by craft producers. For those starting in the market business, two incubator tables will be available for those who want to work together to provide produce for the community.

It is the goal of the Port Hawkesbury Community Market to give consumers in the Strait Area an opportunity to interact directly with those who take an active role in producing the items they sell.

We aim to market products grown, made, or finished locally. Examples of products that we plan to market include: locally grown vegetables, locally raised chicken, locally caught lobster, locally made breads, cheeses, crafts, etc. The Market emphasizes farm products and food but welcomes arts and crafts of the local economy.

As we open this milestone celebration of Celtic Colours, our hearts are full remembering so many special artists from our 20-year history. Over the years we have made many musical friends around the world, and lost some wonderful musicians and culture bearers who contributed so much to the Island’s legacy and culture. Tonight, with Scott Macmillan as conductor with the Symphony Nova Scotia and some very familiar faces, we pay tribute to some who are no longer with us; artists so well-loved that they were known by their first names: Buddy, Jerry, John Allan, Raylene and Rita. And we’re thrilled to welcome back our good friend Carlos Núñez, who will help us kick off this 20th year celebrating those who are forever in our hearts.  Tickets can be purchased at the PHCC Box Office (902)625-2591, or online at
